Laura Nelkin is possibly best known for designs that incorporate beads into her knitted jewelry and shawl patterns. She believes that knitting crosses boundaries and brings people together. Laura tries really hard to say no to what does not excite her, and yes as often as she can to things that set her on fire! Today I’m chatting with Laura Scott, Co-Chair of Annie’s Craft Festival, debuting in Ft. Wayne Indiana, October 30th through November 1st. This is a really exciting world-class crafting event, and Laura was able to take the time out of her busy schedule to share the details about this really unique Festival. Annie's is one of the largest and most diverse sources of craft designs, instruction and supplies in the U.S. Annie’s produces a catalog, several craft publications, such as Creative Knitting, Crochet! Crochet World, Quilter’s World, Cardmaker and Just Cross Stitch. Annie’s also has a kit club, a fiction book series, video classes and the popular PBS TV show series, Knit and Crochet Now! with Deborah Norville, who will be the new host starting this coming January. Beth is a knitting teacher, designer, and technical editor whose curiosity has led her to visit many countries (stranded color, EPS, k1b, lace, ...) on the knitting-world map. Originally from New England, she now lives in San Francisco, where mountains, ocean, and Haight Street are always good sources of inspiration. Her designs have been published in Creative Knitting and Knitters' magazine, as well as by Cascade Yarns, Claudia's Handpaint, Fiesta Yarns, and Red Heart. She has been teaching locally since 2003, and nationally at STITCHES Expos since 2005. What she loves most about teaching is finding ways to make light bulbs pop on in her students' heads and helping them grow as knitters. What we can do in our knitting, we can do in our lives. Throw the spaghetti on the wall and see what sticks. Keep what works, throw out the rest. Jeanne Carver, along with husband Dan, own and operate the historic Imperial Stock Ranch in north central Oregon. Established in 1871 as a homestead claim, it became Oregon’s largest individually owned land and livestock holding by 1900, running tens of thousands of sheep. Located in a high desert climate, the ranch has maintained production in sheep, cattle, grains and hay throughout its history of more than 144 years. The ranch headquarters are a National Historic District. The Carvers have been awarded numerous honors in their conservation work. Jeanne was awarded an Orchid Award, given by the Portland Business Journal, for Women of Influence for 2014; and Dan and Jeanne were awarded the Oregon Agriculture Connection Award in 2014, for their leadership in connecting consumers to the source of food and fiber. Imperial Yarn was chosen to provide the yarn for the Opening Ceremony uniforms, designed by Ralph Lauren for Team USA in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. In this episode, I'm chatting with Norah Gaughan who is perhaps best known for her book Knitting Nature and a nine year stint as Design Director at Berroco. Today, Norah works as an independent designer, with her current ventures including: being a member of the Brooklyn Tweed Design Team and designing a collection of pieces in collaboration with The Fibre Co. In my own knitting journey, I first stumbled across Norah in the book: Knitting in America. I so captivated by her story because it was at that time that I knew I wanted to embark on a career in the needle arts, and it's one of the earliest books I acquired on the subject of what it means to be a knitwear designer, and reading Norah's story set a fire inside of me, which is why I'm so honored to have Norah on Power Purls!
